It's the end of the road for Karl Stefanovic, and TODAY Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkins couldn't be more proud of his contributions to the show over the past 14 years.

SPECULATION is mounting that Today newsreader Sylvia Jeffreys will depart the troubled breakfast show, clearing the way for a fresh line-up in the New Year.

"Karl Stefanovic has been a co-host of this great show for 14 years and I've had the honour and pleasure, and pressure, sometimes of working alongside him nearly every day over that time, and I can tell you from the heart that there is nobody who has worked harder for this show than Karl", Richard said. It's a huge shake-up that's been some 14 years in the making, and nobody is more aware of it than the remaining Today Show co-hosts themselves.

Stefanovic, who is now on his honeymoon in the United States after marrying Jasmine Yarbrough earlier this month, has copped a barrage of negative attention on his personal life.

I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be good enough to host this grand show for so long.

Rumours suggest Nine News Perth presenter Tracy Vo could replace Sylvia on Today.

Stefanovic's brother, Peter, was also dropped by the network after major crisis talks.

Lemina has stood out this season as a key player and is thought highly of by Hasenhuttl. But cracks started to appear in the Tuchel-Rabiot relationship in October.

The Today show has delivered an emotional tribute to Karl Stefanovic off the back of his stunning exit from the program.

In March, Peter and Karl were embroiled in the Ubergate scandal after their private phone conversation in a taxi was leaked to New Idea magazine.

Channel 9 has repeatedly denied, often furiously, that he won't front the struggling show in 2019.

Industry commentator David Knox, editor of the blog TV Tonight, told news.com.au something has to give. In September, it was soundly beaten by competitor Sunrise on Channel Seven.

"Karl Stefanovic has been a co-host of this great show for 14 years and I've had the honour and pleasure, and pressure, sometimes of working alongside him nearly every day over that time, and I can tell you from the heart that there is nobody who has worked harder for this show than Karl", Wilkins said.

The axing of Nine's once most-popular host comes two weeks after the couple's lavish four-day Mexican wedding, which was reportedly the "final straw" in Nine bosses' decision to let Stefanovic go.
