FCC probes outage of CenturyLink 911 emergency call service

The company said in a tweet Thursday that it estimated service would be restored around 1 a.m. Friday, but discovered additional problems.

One member of the Federal Communications Commission said the cause of the national outage needed to be investigated, the AP reported.

"When an emergency strikes, it's critical that Americans are able to use 911 to reach those who can help". "The CenturyLink service outage is therefore completely unacceptable, and its breadth and duration are particularly troubling". It provided no other details, including how many customers were affected.

Shortly after noon, CenturyLink announced it was "aware of some 911 service disruptions affecting various areas through the United States".

The outage also did not affect text-to-911 in all areas where that feature is available.

The outage also cut off internet service for CenturyLink customers in some cities, including Denver, Los Angeles, Dallas and Chicago, CNN affiliate KOMO in Seattle reported.

In Idaho, Emergency Office Management Director Brad Richy said he didn't receive any reports of 911 service failures, but some state agencies, including the state Department of Correction, lost service on internet-based phones.

Some ATM machines weren't working in Idaho and Montana. Patient records have been hard to access for medical centres in north Colorado and for other locations that haven't been confirmed.

The FCC has previously fined carriers for 911 outages that it deemed preventable.

Problems stretched in severity from knocking out Washington State 911 service to blocking incoming calls to businesses, including The World-Herald. Rather than using digital devices, they had to take notes with pencil and paper, according to the Greeley Tribune.

"This inquiry will include an examination of the effect that CenturyLink's outage appears to have had on other providers' 911 services", he said.
