Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz has traveled to Brazil to attend the inauguration of that country's new conservative president, the foreign ministry in Warsaw has said.

The veteran premier was addressing a press conference streamed online from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where he is on an official visit.

Animal rights activists blocked traffic at a major Toronto intersection on Tuesday, staging a "die-in" to protest the inauguration of Brazil's new far-right president and his proposed environmental policies.

Brazil entered a new chapter in its history on Tuesday, January 1, embracing a far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, whose determination to break with decades of centrist rule has raised both hopes and fears. "Together, under God's protection, we shall bring prosperity and progress to our people!" Netanyahu said Bolsonaro assured him Brazil's embassy will be moved to Jerusalem.

For example, just before his inauguration, Mr Bolsonaro told the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he would follow Mr Trump's lead and move his country's embassy to Jerusalem.

Netanyahu is the first Israeli prime minister to visit Brazil.

But amid a backdrop of economic crisis, rising violence and corruption scandals that stained all of Brazil's main political parties, Bolsonaro cultivated an image as the outsider candidate and swept to victory in an election fuelled by anti-establishment sentiment.

Mr Netanyahu said he would not step down in the event of being summoned for a hearing by the prosecutor general before the elections, a necessary step ahead of being formally charged.

While his government, which takes over on Wednesday, features a US-trained free market advocate as economy minister, and a star anti-corruption judge as justice minister, almost a third of the 22 ministerial posts are held by ex-military men.

Bolsonaro, 63, took the oath of office at 3:10 p.m. local time at a ceremony held at the National Congress building in the capital Brasilia.

But several others, like Republican Senator Rand Paul and former congressman Dr. Ron Paul, have defended Trump's decision to withdraw the American troops in Syria, with Dr. Paul saying that the United States needs to "have a clean cut" with military involvement in the Middle East.

The Arab League had told Bolsonaro that moving the embassy to Jerusalem would be a setback for relations with Arab countries, according to a letter seen by Reuters news agency earlier in December.

"We are counting on Congress to provide the judicial support so police can do their jobs", Bolsonaro said, signaling that he may soon submit legislation that would allow police to be tried outside the criminal system.

In his inaugural speech, Bolsonaro called for unity, and a pact between society and the three different branches of government "to rebuild our country".
