Yankees Add Tulowitzki, Stay Engaged With Machado

The New York Yankees have agreed to a deal with Troy Tulowitzki, according to sources.

Passan noted this move doesn't take the Yankees out of the Machado sweepstakes, but perhaps Tulowitzki could also serve as a sort of insurance policy in the event the still-undecided Machado opts to play elsewhere. If the deal is finalized following a physical exam, NY will only have to pay $555,000 for Tulowitzki, while the Toronto Blue Jays, who released him last month, will foot most of the 34-year-old's $20 million contract. Toronto would pay all but the big league minimum in the Yankees deal, which would be offset against his 2018 salary. He missed all of last season due to injury after being limited to just 66 games in 2017. With Didi's impending return that's no guarantee with the Yankees but as most of us know Tulowitzki has always dreamed of wearing the pinstripes and grew up idolizing Yankees legend and former shortstop Derek Jeter.

That Tulowitzki picked the Yankees without the assurance of 500-plus plate appearances exemplifies just how motivated he is to play for them.

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki throws to first base against the Cincinnati Reds during a game in Toronto on May 30, 2017. In 2010 and 2011, he won the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger at shortstop. The Yankees have been mentioned around the former Baltimore infielder more than any other team.

Throngs to pack Times Square for mild, rainy New Year's Eve
Umbrellas were banned as part of the tight security plan, police said, reflecting concern over the possibility of random attacks. At 10 p.m., Lisa "Kennedy" Montgomery and Pete Hegseth will co-host " All-American New Year " live from Times Square.

While the Yankees probably are not expecting All-Star calibre performance from the ageing shortstop, they can, if Tulowitzki remains healthy, bank on some decent offensive production.

As baseball comes out of the holiday slowdown, the entire shape of the off-season still hinges, as it has since the free agent market opened in November, on where and when Machado and Harper will sign. The Blue Jays will pay the remainder.

If he proves he can still hit, even when Gregorius comes back, Tulowitzki can give the New York Yankees depth and even get some at-bats at DH for them. It should have nearly no impact on their Machado pursuit, aside from perhaps a little extra leverage in negotiations.
