"We've got a lot to digest", the group's chairman, Del.

"The party's put in an odd position", said Liam Donovan, a Republican strategist who, like much of the political world, watched Virginia's developments with astonishment Wednesday.

State Attorney General Mark Herring admitted Wednesday he wore blackface to a college costume party in 1980.

But then rumours began circulating of another controversial photo, and this time it was Herring who was said to been in "blackface".

The Associated Press typically does not identify those who say they were sexually assaulted, but Tyson issued the statement in her name.

Since the #MeToo movement emerged, Tyson has been frequently quoted as an expert about the intersection of politics and sexual assault and harassment claims, including the allegations by multiple women that triggered the 2017 resignation of Sen.

The crisis threatens to bring down all three politicians, all of them Democrats. In a statement released earlier by Fairfax, he said Tyson "stayed in touch" with him in the months following the encounter. "Given his false assertions, I'm compelled to make clear what happened".

Virtually every Virginia Democrat, and most major figures in the party, called for Northam to resign, a move that would in the normal line of succession elevate Democratic Lt, Gov. Justin Fairfax to the governor's mansion.

Fairfax has denied the allegation, but admitted he'd had an encounter with the woman that he said was completely consensual. He has since refused to resign, despite growing calls to do so. But they were quieter as two more scandals - one involving race, another a sexual assault allegation - rocked Virginia's statehouse. "I think some of it stupidity". This is moving way too quickly.

Northam, 59, described the picture as "shocking and horrific" and while initially suggesting he was depicted later denied that he was either of the people in the photo.

Democrats have expressed fear that the uproar over the Governor could jeopardise their chances of taking control of the GOP-dominated Virginia legislature this year.

Up to now, the Democrats nationally have taken an aggressive stand against misconduct in their ranks, in part so that they can criticize Trump's behavior without being accused of hypocrisy.

If those three Democrats were to leave office, conservative Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Kirk Cox (R) would take the governorship. When asked by a reporter if he could still moonwalk, Northam's wife Pam stopped him from embarrassing himself further.

Northam has come under pressure from almost the entire Democratic establishment to resign after the discovery of a photo on his profile page in the Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook of someone in blackface standing next to a person in a Ku Klux Klan hood and robe. NBC host Megyn Kelly had her show canceled and was ousted from the network previous year, after she suggested that wearing blackface is acceptable as part of a costume. But he did admit wearing dark shoe polish on his face to imitate pop singer Michael Jackson while he was in the Army in 1984.

"Mr Herring came down hard on Mr Northam when the yearbook photo surfaced, condemning it as "indefensible", profoundly offensive", and "shocking and deeply disappointing". He called for Northam to step down the next day, saying "it is no longer possible" for him to lead the state.

"It sounds ridiculous even now writing it".

"That conduct clearly shows that, as a young man, I had a callous and inexcusable lack of awareness and insensitivity to the pain my behaviour could inflict on others", he said.

"This conduct is in no way reflective of the man I have become in the almost 40 years since", he said.
