Wells Fargo customers have been unable to access their online bank accounts for more than seven hours today - after smoke knackered one of its data centers.

According to the bank's social media accounts, the outage was first reported shortly after 6 a.m.

The bank said they are working to restore the services, but many Twitter users said the bank's debit cards were not working as well.

O'Shea says it's always a good idea to pay your bills a few days before the due date if you can, just in case your bank suffers a service interruption.

The accidental activation of a fire suppression system at a Wells Fargo server farm in Shoreview, Minnesota resulted to the bank's widespread outage that affected mobile and online banking services as well as ATM operations.

ABC15 reached out to Wells Fargo for further explanation regarding the outages but has not yet heard back. "We apologize for the inconvenience", it said.

Mobile and Online Banking systems are operational, with the exception of some features, such as consumer credit card and mortgage balances, that were still being restored.

The online problems add to customer headaches for Wells, which has tried to fix damaged relations after revelations in 2016 that employees possibly opened 3.5 million unauthorized accounts to meet high-pressure sales goals. Charles Schwab Investment Advisory Inc. purchased a new stake in Wells Fargo & Co in the second quarter valued at $321,220,000.
