Air Canada has 24 MAX 8 aircraft, which it uses mainly for domestic and US routes, and cancelled London-bound flights from Halifax and St. John's, N.L., after the United Kingdom banned all Boeing MAX 8 jets from its airspace.

"We are much closer to that possibility and that's why we grounded the airplanes", Daniel Elwell said on NBC's "Today" show.

The devices contain flight information and voice recordings which will enable investigators determine the cause of the crash.

He said there are similarities between the Ethiopian Airlines flight profile and that of a Lion Air flight involving the same aircraft that crashed off the Indonesian coast in October.

Boeing executives announced that they had paused delivery of the Max, although the company planned to continue building the jets while it weighs the effect of the grounding on production.

The investigations into both 737 Max crashes are underway, and expected to focus on the automated controls.

Captain Dennis Tajer, a 737 pilot with American Airlines, met with Boeing executives in November, and said they weren't entirely forthcoming after the Lion Air crash.

Japan Airlines Co. has no plans to acquire the 737 Max 8.

Attention has focussed since the Lion Air crash on an automated anti-stall system in the 737 Max that dips the plane's nose down.

The BEA has taken charge of the Ethiopian Airlines aircraft's black boxes, but a spokesman said the first analyses could take between half a day and several days, depending on the boxes' condition. We were taken to the crash site on Wednesday but not allowed to get a closer look.
