Trump's "new" border wall section in California dates to Obama administration

Last month, the Department of Homeland Security requested that the defence department build 57 miles of 18-foot fencing near Yuma, Arizona and El Paso, Texas, which have seen enormous increases in the number of border crossers, especially families.

Hours before Trump touched down in Southern California, several hundred protesters gathered in the parking lot next to the border site, chanting anti-Trump slogans in both English and Spanish while a balloon depicting the president as a baby flew overhead.

Hammering on a favourite theme, Mr Trump said he was considering imposing an unspecified economic penalty on Mexico unless it helped alleviate the United States' drug and immigrant flows.

As Trump touts his signature campaign promise as the solution to the recent surge of migrant families crossing the border, here are questions and answers about the various barriers along the border and those that are in the works.

It remains unclear exactly what was behind the Vitiello decision. "They are going to have to live with it, they are going to have to live with it", Trump said Thursday. "I just went through a hoax", Trump said to laughter in the room.

The activity was met with some confusion, with some Homeland Security officials saying it was done in error. "They shouldn't be coming in", he said.

An empowered Miller is also eyeing the removal of Lee Francis Cissna, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which runs the legal immigration system, according to two people who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss internal staffing matters.

The director's job requires Senate confirmation. However, his nomination process never ran too smoothly. He will still remain acting director of the agency tasked with enforcing immigration law in the interior of the U.S.

President Trump: Biden is only a threat to himself
Several prominent Democratic women have come to Biden's defense , suggesting such behavior is part of his affectionate demeanor. Speaking to reporters after his speech, Biden said it wasn't his intent to "make light of anyone's discomfort".

The remarks, following a week of back-and-forth threats to close the border, risked further muddying the US relationship with its second-largest trading partner.

"We're going to shut (the border) down if we have to".

All three immigration agencies - which are part of the Department of Homeland Security - have been under intense scrutiny for enforcement and detention practices along the USA southern border. Part of its mission is to arrest immigrants who are in the USA illegally, and that has made the agency a symbol of Trump's hard-line policies and target for Democrats.

Still, various plans for more border barriers are moving along. Whether it's asylum. Whether it's anything you want.

"Somebody said it will take a year". The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday also filed a lawsuit challenging Trump's ability to seize the funds, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, also a Democrat, said.

He described the section of border barrier he visited as new, even though it was a long-planned replacement for an older barrier.

Until Thursday, the White House had been signalling that Trump could imminently order a full or partial closure of the huge border in response to what Trump says is a "crisis" and "national emergency".
