Settlements are seen as illegal under global law, although Israel disagrees.

The decisions taken by the United States that favour Israel's claims on Jerusalem and the Golan Heights risk engulfing the Middle East region in yet more conflict and tension, Jordan's foreign minister said on Saturday.

Israelis don't directly elect lawmakers or the prime minister, but vote for party tickets, and seats are allocated in proportion to the number of votes won.

Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator and a close aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said: "Israel will continue to brazenly violate global law for as long as the worldwide community will continue to reward Israel with impunity, particularly with the Trump Administration's support and endorsement of Israel's violation of the national and human rights of the people of Palestine".

Netanyahu's announcement means that large Jewish communities like Ma'ale Adumim and smaller ones in what is called the West Bank would be part of Israel in any future negotiations with the Palestinian Authority.

Such a bloc, he said, would best protect Israel's security. It says settlements are not a genuine obstacle to peace and are negotiable.

"You are asking whether we are moving on to the next stage - the answer is yes, we will move to the next stage. Settlements are illegal and they will be removed", a spokesman for Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said.

If, as expected, Netanyahu is picked to form the next government, he would be the longest serving prime minister in the country's history.

Any misadventure to meet a befitting response; Pakistan tells India
The tension between the two countries triggered by the Pulwama strike appeared to have eased slightly in the last couple of weeks. However Indian officials have been quick to dismiss the claims, and accused officials of whipping up "war hysteria".

What is the political background?

On Sunday, Deri said that despite his party's loyalty toward the prime minister, Netanyahu has shown "ingratitude", in his attempt to attract Likud voters.

In Mr Netanyahu's own Likud party, 28 out of the 29 lawmakers running for re-election are on record as supporting this approach.

Gantz was greeted by his enthusiastic backers with drums and chants of "Here he comes, the next prime minister!" "Arab voters are heading to the polling stations in droves", he said in comments largely condemned as being racist.

However, the Trump administration has carried out a series of actions that have inflamed Palestinian opinion and generally pleased Israel. "And we will impose sovereignty over the settlements in Judea and Samaria [West Bank]". In response Mr Abbas cut off relations with the United States, saying the U.S. could no longer be a peace broker.

Palestinian leaders immediately reacted with anger.

He has repeatedly spoken of Trump's recognition of the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights as two of his major accomplishments.

"This is, at the end of the day, this is the scenario, and this is where they think they can dictate a solution by destroying the concept of two states", said Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat.
