Since then, the country's stark political divisions have yielded two rival seats of power: one in eastern Libya, with which Haftar is associated, and another in Tripoli, which enjoys United Nations support.

The Libyan National Army forces, led by Haftar, have been seeking to reach the centre of the capital Tripoli after they have easily advanced through the desert and reached urban areas that form a more hard stage for them, amid increasing numbers of deaths and displacement and the West's fears that this will threaten its peace plan.

He has asked for "an immediate halt to any further air operations" in order to bring the country back from the brink of what he called "the effective start of a civil war".

This newsroom's sources emphasised that despite "tight resources", the national hospital would still be prepared to cater to the potential increase in patients, with arrivals from Libya expected to take place.

Tripoli's only functioning airport has been attacked as eastern forces advancing on the Libyan capital disregard worldwide appeals for a truce in the latest of a cycle of warfare ongoing since Muammar Gaddafi's fall in 2011.

The Libyan National Army (LNA) forces of eastern commander Khalifa Haftar held positions in the suburbs about 11 km (7 miles) south of the center, with steel containers and pickups with mounted machine-guns blocking their way into the city.

The United Nations said at least 4,500 Tripoli residents had been displaced, most moving away from their homes in conflict areas to safer districts of the city.

The Libyan National Army carried out air strikes on southern Tripoli, while it seeks to advance towards the centre of the city from the abandoned airport.

Haftar, whose key allies are the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Russian Federation, is a former Qaddafi military chief who has emerged as a major player in Libya's political struggle.

"Those who defend the capital are forces allied to the Tripoli administration - armed brigades and rebels -, the inhabitants - who are willing to die for it - and among them, there are army officers".

At least 2,800 people have so far fled fighting around Tripoli, the United Nations says.

Serraj has run Tripoli since 2016 as part of a UN-brokered deal boycotted by Haftar.

The UN had scheduled a three-day conference on April 14 in the southwestern town of Ghadames to discuss a constitutional framework for elections as a way to end the North African country's eight-year crisis.

The UN mission in Libya later confirmed that it was still operating in Tripoli in spite of the unrest south of the capital.
