6 things to do with your dog in Connecticut

Entertainment // Things To Do

They say dog is man’s best friend, and what kind of person would leave their best friend alone all summer?

While there are plenty of breweries and wineries around the state that allow four-legged guests to accompany their humans, and dog owners can certainly hit up their local dog park or pamper their pooch at the local dog salon, some people (and pups) may be looking for a different canine adventure.

Here are five ways to pal around with Fido in Connecticut.

Yappy hour

Ever wish there was a happy hour for dogs? Well at MoCA Westport there is. On the first Thursday of every month, the museum will be holding an event during which dogs can socialize and humans can meet adoptable pets. Pups can get a free portrait taken while their “pawrents” sip on custom drinks. Humans are urged to keep their babies on a leash at this outdoor event. The event is free and will be held monthly throughout the summer.

Roaming with Rover

If you’re a fan of hiking and have a dog that’s a bundle of energy, hit the trails with your furry bestie so Rover can roam.. Unfortunately not all of the hiking trails in Connecticut are dog-friendly, but there are exceptions. In Fairfield, leashed pups can explore the trails at Lake Mohegan and Burr Pond State Park in Torrington is dog-friendly as well.

The Southbury Dog Park offers 14 acres of off-leash fun where pups and humans are free to roam. The park boasts fields, woods, trails and even a river for your pooch to take a dip. The park also has a smaller fenced-in area as well.

The SoNo Collection Mall in Norwalk is hosting a “Pup Brunch” every Sunday through August. BHumans will enjoy brunch al fresco while their best friends sip on puppuccinos and treats. And Sunday isn’t the only day dogs are welcome at the mall. The SoNo Collection is a dog-friendly mall, allowing leashed pups during business hours.

Barks and books

For a pooch who can’t quite take the heat, recline and relax into entirely new worlds at Hamden’s dog-friendly bookstore, Books and Company. The store welcomes four-legged friends to peruse the bookshelves with their humans. The bookstore also has a cafe.

Looking to take a day trip to Mystic? You can bring your pup with you. Not only is Mystic Seaport a dog-friendly destination, but the Mystic Pet Shop is a pet bakery that will leave all the good boys and girls wagging their tails. So while you’re chomping down a slice from Mystic Pizza (yes, like the film) your best pal can have a pizza-shaped treat or even a pup pie from the shop’s dog bakery.
